Apple Pie Dump Cake Recipe

Apple Pie Dump Cake is one of the easiest and most delicious desserts you will ever make. It’s a twist on my Pineapple Cherry Dump Cake, but instead of using pineapples and cherry pie filling, I use apple pie filling instead.

It is a great alternative to traditional apple pie and the best part is how quickly it all comes together. All you have to do is layer (or dump) the four ingredients into a baking dish, put it in the oven, and in less than an hour, you’ve got a dessert that is ready to be enjoyed.

Once it comes out of the oven, scoop it into a bowl and top it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Trust me, with just one bite everyone will be asking for more!

Apple pie dump cake tastes very similar to apple crisp, but it is much easier to make! It takes seconds to prepare and requires just 4 ingredients!

One of the reasons this dessert is so popular is that it tastes like a cross between apple crisp and a deconstructed apple pie, but is even easier to make. I takes only seconds to prepare and requires just four simple ingredients.

This makes it perfect for those times when you want to make a delicious dessert but don’t have the time or energy to spend hours in the kitchen. It’s my favorite summer holiday dessert recipe to serve on Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 (21 ounce) cans apple pie filling
  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice

More About The Ingredients:

Apple Pie Filling: This recipe calls for two standard cans of apple pie filling. You can usually find them in the baking aisle at your local grocery store.

In some smaller markets, you might even come across frozen apple pie filling. If you have access to fresh apples, or if you’re lucky enough to have apple trees nearby or a local orchard, you can make your own filling.

Making homemade freezer apple pie filling ahead of time is a great way to preserve the taste of fresh picked apples and use them throughout the year. Recipe Here: Homemade Apple Pie Filling

Yellow Cake Mix: Any standard yellow cake mix will work for this apple dump cake recipe. No need to splurge on a brand name, the generic ones work just as well.

The cake mix is what gives the dessert its thick topping, which goes perfect with the soft, sweet apples underneath.

frozen apple pie filling
Although you would typically use 2 cans of apple pie filling, I used my homemade apple pie filling that I froze last Fall.

Unsalted Butter: I always recommend using unsalted butter in baking recipes. Most dessert recipes don’t need the extra salt, and using unsalted butter gives you better control over the flavor.

Just be sure to melt the butter before using it, as this makes it easier to drizzle evenly over the cake mix.

Apple Pie Spice or Cinnamon: I personally like the flavor of apple pie spice, which combines cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices, giving the dish that classic taste.

However, if you don’t have apple pie spice in your pantry, plain cinnamon works just fine. It adds that classic, warm flavor that pairs perfectly with the apples.

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE APPLE PIE DUMP CAKE

The first step in making Apple Pie Dump Cake is to preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Then, spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.

Next, open the cans of apple pie filling and then pour them into the prepared baking pan. Use a spatula to spread the filling out evenly so that it covers the entire bottom of the dish. This ensures that every bite has a good amount of apple flavor.

Then take the dry yellow cake mix and sprinkle it evenly over the top of the apple pie filling. However, make sure to cover all the apples completely.

cake mix and butter
After you add the apples to the baking dish, sprinkle the yellow cake mix and melted butter on top.

Now, melt the butter in a microwave-safe dish or on the stovetop. Once melted, drizzle the butter over the dry cake mix, trying to cover as much of the surface as possible. The butter helps to create that golden, crispy topping as it bakes.

Finally, sprinkle apple pie spice or cinnamon over the top. This step is optional, but it adds a nice touch of warmth and depth of flavor to the dessert.

Bake Time Required

Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the sides are bubbly. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on it towards the end to make sure it doesn’t overcook.

Once the dump cake is done, take it out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes to set. This also makes it easier to scoop out the servings.

When you’re ready to serve, spoon out a portion into a bowl or onto a plate, and top with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

However, if you aren’t quite ready to eat the dessert when it first comes out of the oven, you are in luck! Apple Pie Dump Cake can be served warm or at room temperature.

If you have leftovers (which is rare because it’s so delicious), store the leftovers in a covered container at room temperature for up to two days, or in the refrigerator for up to five days. You can even freeze it for longer storage, but make sure to reheat it in the oven or microwave before serving.

Trust me, this Apple Pie Dump Cake is one of the easiest and most delicious desserts that you will ever make!

Once the top is lightly browned and the sides are bubbling up, remove the dump cake from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
