In the summer, one of my favorite, easy to make recipes is Garlic Honey Lime Shrimp. It tastes light and refreshing and is ready to eat in just 15 minutes!
It can be served as a stand alone main dish. Or you can serve it over a bed of rice or as the protein in a salad.
However we also like to serve the shrimp as an appetizer at parties, potlucks and holiday gatherings.
Regardless of how you serve it, I am sure it will become your new favorite, easy to make recipe that you will make over and over again!
Garlic Honey Lime Shrimp Recipe
Ingredients
Extra virgin olive oil – The shrimp will be cooked in both in extra virgin olive oil and butter to provide the most flavor.
Butter – Use unsalted butter for this recipe. You can always add more salt if you need it once the shrimp is cooked.
Garlic – It is always best to use fresh garlic cloves. However, if you have only have refrigerated minced garlic, that will work as well.
Honey – Use fresh, local honey whenever possible. You can easily find honey in the summer at most Farmer’s Markets. Yes, it is a little more pricey than the generic store-bought honey. However, because honey never goes bad, it is worth the extra cost.
Lime juice – I use fresh squeezed lime juice. Although, bottled lime juice works perfectly fine in this Garlic Honey Shrimp recipe.
Salt – Use Kosher or sea salt.
Cayenne pepper – Don’t let the addition of cayenne pepper scare you. It adds a little flavor and the majority of the heat is neutralized by the other ingredients. You can definitely decrease the amount of cayenne pepper if you can’t handle any heat. However, I would definitely add a little pinch at the very least.
What Type Of Shrimp To Use?
Shrimp – This recipe calls for shelled and deveined shrimp. You can purchase fresh shrimp and peel and devein them yourself.
However, you can also purchase shrimp that is already peeled and deveined in both the butcher case and in the freezer section of the grocery store.
Purchase large shrimp. This way you can use it for either a main dish or as an appetizer.
Parsley – Although the parsley is used as the garnish, it really does add a nice flavor to the shrimp. When you purchase parsley, wrap the stems in a damp paper towel and store in the refrigerator so that it lasts longer.
Preparation Instructions
The first step making this Honey Garlic Lime Shrimp recipe is to prepare the shrimp.
If you bought shelled shrimp you will need to remove the shell. The easiest way to do this is to flip the shrimp over and use a tine of a fork to break through the shell.
Then you can easily remove the shell by pulling outward and upward. If you are eating the shrimp as an appetizer, you can leave the tail on if you prefer.
Once the shell is removed it is time to devein the shrimp. Using a sharp knife, make a shallow cut down the back of the shrimp.
You will see a small black vein that is exposed. Use the tip of the knife to carefully pull the vein away from the shrimp and discard.
Of course you can skip this step if you purchased shrimp that is already peeled and deveined.
However, no matter what shrimp you use, be sure to rinse them in cold water and pat them dry before proceeding with the next step.
Cooking Instructions
Now it is time to start cooking your Honey Garlic Lime Shrimp. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil and butter.
Once the butter is melted add the garlic and saute until the minced garlic turns slightly brown.
Then add the honey, lime juice, salt and cayenne pepper to the skillet and stir. Let the garlic honey lime sauce thicken until it sticks to the back of a spatula or spoon.
Add the shrimp and cook until the shrimp turns opaque in color. Remove the shrimp to a platter and garnish with chopped parsley and serve immediately.
Enjoy! Mary
