Air Fryer Stromboli Recipe

Did you know that you can make Stromboli in your air fryer? Best of all it can be prepared and ready to eat in less than 10 minutes!

The air fryer has truly made home cooking quick and easy, and this recipe is a testament to that. It’s a perfect choice for pizza night offering a great twist on the traditional pizza that both kids and adults love.

Thanks to the convenience of refrigerator pizza dough the preparation process is also a breeze. Rather than spending time making homemade dough all you have to do is layer pre-made dough with your favorite fillings and roll.

Once the Stromboli comes out of the air fryer you can sprinkle Parmesan and parsley on top and serve it with warm marinara sauce for an added touch.

This Stromboli is not only ideal as a main dish for a family dinner, but it can also be sliced and served as appetizers for parties or gatherings. The versatility of this dish makes it a fantastic addition to your air fryer recipe collection.

By cooking it in the air fryer it ensures that you will get a golden, crispy exterior crust. And the inside will be nice and soft with melting cheese and pepperoni pouring out of the center.

If they don’t know better your friends and family will think that you ordered it from your favorite pizzeria. It definitely is an impressive recipe that takes very little time and effort to make!

Difference Between Stromboli and Calzone

Stromboli and calzones are both delicious Italian creations that share many similarities, but they have distinct differences. Although they sometimes can contain the same ingredients, the main difference is in their shape.

A calzone is basically a pizza folded in half before baking. This creates a half-moon shape filled with typical pizza ingredients.

On the other hand, Stromboli is rolled like a burrito. And the fillings can extend beyond traditional pizza toppings, often including various deli meats and cheeses.

Stromboli is often sliced and served as an appetizer, but can also be served as a complete main course. Luckily both can be made easily in your air fryer. (see: Air Fryer Calzone Recipe)

Easy Short Cuts

As mentioned before, you can definitely spend the time making Homemade Pizza Dough. However, because this recipe focuses on a quick and easy process we will use a few short cuts to get dinner on the table in a fraction of the time.

There are many options for pre-made pizza dough. The most common option is to purchase a tube of refrigerator pizza crust. You can usually find this in the refrigerated section of your local grocery store, often near the biscuits and tubes of cookie dough.

However you may also purchase fresh made pizza dough that is often found in the refrigerated speciality aisle at some grocery stores. I have found a 1 pound package of pizza dough at Aldi’s on several occasions and it works very well to make this Air Fryer Stromboli recipe.

This recipe comes together in no time with the use of a few store bought ingredients.

In addition to purchasing pizza crust dough, you can also save yourself time and energy by buying a jar of pizza sauce and pre-shredded cheese. As much as I like to make my Homemade Pizza Sauce at the end of summer when I have so many fresh picked tomatoes that I don’t know what to do with, most often I will use a jar of marinara.

And although cheese melts better if you shred a block of it yourself, I would imagine most of us will use a bag of shredded Mozzarella cheese to make stromboli.

2 Ingredient Homemade Pizza Crust Option

While this recipe calls for a tube of refrigerator pizza crust, you can also use homemade dough if you prefer. The only requirement is that it needs to roll out to 1/4 inch thickness.

An easy homemade pizza dough recipe you might consider includes only self-rising flour and nonfat Greek yogurt. These are the same two ingredients that I use to make Air Fryer Bagels.

Combine 1 1/2 cups of self-rising flour with 1 cup of yogurt and mix until well incorporated. Then roll out the dough as instructed. *Added hint: for more flavor add a little garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and basil.

How To Get The Crust To Turn Golden Brown

To achieve a beautiful golden-brown crust, it is crucial to use an egg wash. This is a mixture of one beaten egg and a teaspoon of water.

Brushing this mixture onto the Stromboli before air frying results in a beautifully browned, shiny crust.

Be sure to leave plenty of room around the edges so that you can roll up the Stromboli without all the fillings falling out.

Why Vent Stromboli?

Venting your Stromboli is crucial to ensure it cooks evenly. By making small diagonal slits in the top of the crust before air frying, you allow steam to escape.

This prevents the Stromboli from bursting or becoming soggy, and it promotes more even cooking when in the air fryer.

Air Fryer Stromboli Cooking Tips

1. When using the air fryer, preheating is key to achieving consistent results.

2. It is very important to spray the basket with oil to prevent the dough from sticking.

3. Always place the Stromboli seam side down to prevent it from unrolling and to prevent the filling from oozing out.

4. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook in batches. Make sure that there is at least 1/2 inch space between Stromboli logs.

5. To make sure your dough is fully baked, check the internal temperature with an instant-read digital thermometer to ensure that the dough has reached 165°F.

INSTRUCTIONS

On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza crust dough into a rectangle to 1/4 inch thickness (approximately 10″x14″ rectangle). Cut the dough in half to form two rectangles.

Add 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on top of each pizza dough section. Use the back of a spoon to spread, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges.

Sprinkle 1/2 cup cheese over the sauce on each, then add with pepperoni. Roll each rectangle starting at the short end, tucking in the pepperoni as you roll.

Seal by pinching the long seam together. Then pinch each end to seal and tuck the ends under the roll.

In a small bowl whisk the egg and water together. Then brush the tops of the stromboli with the egg wash.

Use a sharp knife to gently cut diagonal slit, approximately every 2 inches, in the top of each crust so that the Stromboli can vent while cooking.
