Egg In A Hole – An Easy To Make Breakfast Recipe

Egg in a hole is a nostalgic breakfast dish that has been served since the 19th century and has become popular in both restaurants and the common household for decades.

The iconic fried egg cooked in a piece of toast with the center cut out is a huge hit with just about everyone who enjoys breakfast.

Depending on where you live you may know this recipe by a different name. Other common names include: eggs in a frame, eggs in a nest, gashouse eggs, bullseye eggs, hole in one, and one-eyed Jack.

But whatever name that it is assigned, the cooking process remains the same. A hole is cut out in the center of a piece of bread with a biscuit cutter or rimmed glass.

Then it is placed in a buttered skillet where an egg is cracked in the center of the hole and seasoned. Once the egg whites are set, the bread and egg are flipped over and the cooking process continues for just a couple of minutes.

This iconic meal remains hugely popular today in part because of the presentation when served. But also because it takes just minutes to prepare.

Egg in a Hole Recipe

INGREDIENTS

Butter
White or wheat bread
Eggs
Salt & Pepper
Chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

The first step in making Egg in a Hole is to cut out the center of the bread. Do this by using a small round cookie cutter or small biscuit cutter to cut the center out of the slice of bread.

However, if you don’t have a round cutter, you can use a small rimmed glass or even a pair of scissors or a sharp knife. Unlike homemade biscuits, the circle in this recipe does not have to be perfect.

Once the center of the bread is cut, butter both sides of the bread and the cut out circle. If you find it too hard to butter the cut bread, save the butter to grease the cooking surface.

Now place a large skillet or a griddle on medium heat. When the surface is hot, place both the buttered bread and the center piece on the skillet.

Or, if you didn’t butter the bread, place the butter on the hot surface. Once melted, place the bread pieces directly over the buttered area.

Then crack an egg directly into the hole in each slice of bread. Before the egg whites begin to cook season the top with a little salt and pepper.

Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until the egg whites begin to set and you can safely flip it. Flip the bread/egg and the small, round bread piece.

**Hint – to speed up the process of the egg whites becoming set, place a glass lid over top of the Egg in a Hole. As the griddle heats up, the steam will begin to cook the egg whites.

Cook until the desired softness of the egg is reached. For over easy, cook for about 2 minutes. Over medium, cook 3-5 minutes.

If you prefer your eggs sunny side up with a runny yolk, toast the first side of the bread until golden brown. Then flip the bread over and crack the egg in the hole.

Season with salt and pepper and cook until the desired doneness of the egg is reached. Serve immediately, garnishing with chopped parsley if desired.

Be sure to serve your egg in a hole with the toasted center piece of the bread to be used for dipping into the yolk.
