Fried Pickle Ranch Dip

Fried Pickle Ranch Dip takes everything you love about fried pickles and turns it into an easy appetizer to share. It has plenty of chopped dill pickles, a creamy ranch base, and a buttery breadcrumb topping that gives each scoop a little crunch.

If you always order fried pickles when you see them on a restaurant menu, this is a fun recipe to make at home. You get that combination of tangy pickles, ranch seasoning, and toasted crumbs without breading individual pickle slices or heating a pot of oil.

The dip itself is served cold. The only cooking involved is toasting the panko breadcrumbs in a skillet, which takes just a few minutes. Then let the dip chill while you get the rest of your food ready.

It is an easy addition to a football watch party, holiday appetizer table, or casual get-together with friends. Set it out with sturdy potato chips, pretzel crisps, and some fresh vegetables so everyone can choose their favorite way to scoop it up.

How Is This Different From Regular Pickle Dip?

My original Dill Pickle Dip keeps things simple with cream cheese, pickle juice, chopped pickles, and fresh dill. It is a good choice when you want a quick dip with a short ingredient list.

This version starts with less cream cheese and adds sour cream for a softer texture. Dry ranch seasoning brings in garlic, onion, and herb flavor, while a generous amount of chopped pickles gives you pickle pieces throughout the bowl.

However, the toasted topping is what really makes this recipe stand out. Those golden crumbs add the buttery crunch that reminds you of the coating on fried pickles. Add them just before serving so they stay crisp.

Which Pickles Work Best?

Choose dill pickles that you enjoy eating straight from the jar. Refrigerated dill pickles often have a firm texture, but your favorite shelf stable variety will also work. Whole pickles, spears, and chips can all be chopped for this recipe.

Dice them into small pieces rather than large chunks. Smaller pieces spread more evenly through the creamy base and make the dip easier to scoop without breaking your chips.

Drain the chopped pickles in a small strainer, then blot them with paper towels. This simple step helps keep excess liquid from thinning the dip as it sits.

Skip sweet pickles for this version unless you intentionally want a sweeter flavor. Also, taste a pickle before adding extra salt. Between the pickles and ranch seasoning, the dip usually has enough already.

dip ingredients in bowl

Ingredients For fried PIckle RAnch dip

Cream cheese: Use a softened 8 ounce block. Block cream cheese gives the dip body, and letting it soften makes it easier to beat smooth before adding the other ingredients.

Sour cream: This loosens the cream cheese into a scoopable dip and adds a little tang. Full fat sour cream gives you a rich texture.

Dill pickles and pickle juice: The chopped pickles provide texture, while a small amount of juice spreads the pickle flavor throughout the base. Start with the amount listed instead of pouring directly from the jar.

Dry ranch seasoning: Use the powdered seasoning, not prepared bottled ranch dressing. Measure it rather than automatically adding an entire packet, since packet sizes and salt levels vary by brand.

Fresh dill and garlic powder: These round out the flavor without a long list of ingredients. You can substitute dried dill when fresh is not available.

Panko breadcrumbs and butter: Panko has larger, lighter flakes than regular fine breadcrumbs. Toasting it in butter gives the topping its golden color and crunch.

How To Make Fried Pickle Ranch Dip

Specific measurements and complete recipe instructions are located in the printable recipe card below. However, be sure to continue reading for helpful preparation and serving tips.

Toast The Breadcrumbs

Melt the butter in a skillet over medium low heat. Add the panko and stir to coat the crumbs evenly. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the crumbs are golden brown, about 3 to 5 minutes.

Watch closely near the end because they can go from golden to too dark quickly. Transfer them to a plate and let them cool completely. Leaving them in the hot skillet can cause them to keep browning.

Mix The Creamy Base

Beat the softened cream cheese in a medium bowl until smooth. Add the sour cream, ranch seasoning, pickle juice, and garlic powder. Mix again until everything is combined and there are no large cream cheese lumps.

A hand mixer makes this easy, although a sturdy spoon will work if the cream cheese is soft enough. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl so the seasoning gets evenly mixed throughout.

Fold In The Pickles And Chill

Stir in the drained chopped pickles and dill. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This gives the ranch seasoning time to blend into the base and lets the dip firm up slightly.

After chilling, stir and taste. If you prefer a thinner dip, add another teaspoon of pickle juice at a time. Remember that you want it thick enough to hold on a chip.

Add The Crunchy Topping

Spoon the dip into a shallow serving bowl and scatter the cooled breadcrumbs over the top immediately before serving. A shallow bowl gives you more surface area for the crumbs, so more scoops include some crunch.

For a longer gathering, sprinkle on half of the topping first. Keep the remaining crumbs separate and add them as needed to refresh the top.

What To Serve With It

Sturdy ridged potato chips are a good match for this thick dip. Pretzel crisps, pita chips, and crackers work well too. For vegetables, try cucumber rounds, celery sticks, sweet pepper strips, or baby carrots.

If you are building a larger appetizer table, pair it with a warm option like my Jalapeño Popper Dip. My Easy Pepperoni Dip is another option when you want something you can prepare ahead without turning on the oven.

Make Ahead Tips And Leftovers

You can make the fried pickle ranch dip mixture a day ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator. However, toast the breadcrumbs separately and let them cool completely. Then store them in an airtight container at room temperature overnight.

Keep the two parts separate until serving. Breadcrumbs mixed into the dip will absorb moisture and soften, so saving them for the top makes a noticeable difference.

Refrigerate leftover dip promptly and use within 3 to 4 days. The topping will soften once refrigerated on the dip, but you can add freshly toasted crumbs to individual portions. Freezing is not recommended because the dairy base can separate and the pickles lose their crunch.

For your next gathering, make the base ahead, grab your favorite chips, and save the breadcrumb topping for the last minute. That little bit of crunch is what makes this pickle dip worth adding to the appetizer table.
