What Type of Bread To Use For French Toast
When making French toast your bread selection is important. The bread itself needs to be able to retain its shape and hold the flavor of the seasoned batter.
Once it is dipped in the liquid it must saturate thoroughly but not get mushy and fall apart. Therefore, it is always best to use thick, dense bread.
Of course you can make your own homemade bread. Or you can opt for a standard loaf of bread from the bakery and cut it yourself to achieve the thick slices that are desired.
If you do so, choose a loaf of brioche or challah bread. These two types of bread are egg based and have a high butter content which will result in a rich tasting, light and airy end product.
However, the majority of us who will be making this strawberry cheesecake stuffed French toast will most likely do so with sliced bread. Therefore, in keeping with the idea that a thick bread is better than thin bread, it is best to purchase a loaf of Texas toast bread.
You may have to do some searching in the bread aisle, but you will likely find one or two brands of the thick sliced bread. It soaks up the batter perfectly and holds its texture when cooked.
Use Day Old For Best Results
Just like when you make Homemade Dressing for Thanksgiving, it is best to use day old bread to make French toast. This is the general term for using stale bread in your recipes.
The term ‘day old’ refers to fresh, homemade bread that has sat out on the counter overnight. Because most of us don’t make bread on a daily basis, we will use the term stale bread instead.
Stale bread will allow the milk and egg mixture to penetrate the surface of the bread without making it become too soggy. If your bread is still fresh, simply let it sit out overnight in the open air.
Or if you are like me and forget to do this the night before, you can lightly toast the bread in a skillet or in a toaster. However, if you are using Texas toast bread, this step isn’t quite as important because it is such a thick sliced bread.
Which is the exact reason that is the perfect bread to hold the cheesecake filling.
Strawberry Cheesecake Filling
If you have ever made cheesecake, you know how time consuming that it can be. However, don’t let that scare you in this recipe.
This strawberry cheesecake filling is simple and easy to make. It all starts with half of a block of cream cheese.
However, in order to mix the filling the cream cheese needs to be soft. Although you could get up early and set the cream cheese out on the counter, there is a faster way to soften it.
Place the half bar of cream cheese on a microwaveable safe plate. Then microwave it on full power for 30 seconds.
Check to see how soft it is. If it is workable remove it from the microwave and place it in a mixing bowl. If it is still quite firm, continue to microwave in 15 second increments until it is pliable.
Then mix it with the sugar and vanilla extract. Finally, fold in the diced strawberries and the strawberry cheesecake filling is ready!
And if you are a strawberry lover, be sure to make Strawberry Bread. Diced strawberries are scattered throughout the bread and the top is drizzled with a strawberry glaze. It is really the ultimate dessert bread recipe!
