Sheet Pan Sausage and Sweet Potatoes Recipe

This Sheet Pan Sausage and Sweet Potatoes recipe is one of my favorite dishes to make. Sliced sausage and diced sweet potatoes cooked to perfection in the oven on a single sheet pan.

But before the potatoes go in the oven they are seasoned with the warm blend of thyme, rosemary, and garlic. The combination of spices takes the rather bland tasting sweet potatoes and provides them with great flavor.

Then you add the sausage to the pan and once they get warm and browned dinner is ready! It is the perfect dinner to serve any day of the week, but especially in the Fall when you need a warm, comforting meal.

In addition to being delicious, it is a budget friendly meal. Two large sweet potatoes will provide enough potatoes for a family of 6.

Then all that you need is onion, sausage and a few common spices that you most likely already have in your kitchen! However as much as I love the taste of this recipe, I also love that it is made entirely on one pan!

Easy One Pan Recipe

Whenever I make a Sheet Pan recipe, including this Sausage and Sweet Potatoes meal, I am always thankful that there is only one pan to clean up after dinner. It helps me on busy weeknights when I don’t have the time to spend doing the dishes afterwards.

Instead, I can throw the plates and utensils in the dishwasher and only have one additional dish to clean. However, when I am in an even bigger hurry, I will line the sheet pan with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

This makes clean up a breeze! Although parchment paper can be quite costly. Therefore, I have invested in these inexpensive Silicone Mats and they have been a game-changer!

Not only do they prevent food from sticking to the pan, they are super easy to clean. And that means no more scrubbing a pan trying to get caramelized bits of sweet potato and sausage off the pan.

What Type of Sausage To Use

When it comes to this recipe you can use whatever type of pre-cooked sausage that you prefer. From standard Keilbasa or Andouille sausage to chicken, turkey or even plant-based sausage, they will all work in this recipe.

When I make this for adults who like spicy foods, I will use Hot Italian Sausage. However when I making this dish for a family I will sometimes use sausage that has a sweeter filling that includes cheese.

But not matter what flavor of sausage that you prefer, you just need to make sure that the sausage is already cooked. Then all you have to do is heat the sausage on the sheet pan until it is warm and browned on the edges.

How to Slice Sausage

However instead of adding the entire link or links of sausage to the pan, you will need to slice it in bite size pieces. Although you could cut it into bite size rounds, it is best to slice it on an angle.

This not only makes the dish more visually appealing, it actually will make the sausage have more flavor. This is because that more surface area that is touching the sheet pan the more the sausage will brown.

Then each slice will have golden-brown edges which provides great flavor but also a crispy texture that pairs perfectly with the tender sweet potatoes.

How To Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

Although before you can add the sausage to the pan, you must start cooking the sweet potatoes first as they take longer to cook. Start by peeling the potatoes and then use a sharp knife to cut them into cubes.

Be sure to cut them in fairly even size pieces. This will ensure that the potatoes all get done at the same time.

I find it best to cut them into approximately 1 inch sections. This will allow them to become tender and caramelized in the bake time given in the recipe below.

How To Store & Reheat Sheet Pan Sausage and Sweet Potatoes

If you have any leftovers store the cooled sausage and potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. You can also store it in the freezer for up to 3 months.

However, when it comes time to reheat the meal, do yourself a favor and use the oven or air fryer. This will be the only way to retain that crisp texture of the sausage and to recreate that caramelized flavor the sweet potatoes.

Place the leftovers in a oven safe dish. Then place in the oven set at 350°F for 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Or place them in the basket of the air fryer set at 325°F and air fry for 10-15 minutes.

However, if you simply want to reheat the leftovers quickly, place them on a microwave safe plate with a drop or two of water. Then reheat for 60-90 seconds. Although the texture will be altered, it will still taste delicious.

Sheet Pan Sausage and Sweet Potatoes Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 large sweet potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil or other higher heat cooking oil
  • 16 oz. pre-cooked smoked sausage, cut diagonal into 1-inch slices

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat your oven to 425°F. In a small bowl add the thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, salt and pepper and mix to combine. Set aside.

Add the cubed sweet potatoes and the chopped onion to the sheet pan. Drizzle the olive oil on top and then sprinkle the spice mixture on top. Toss to coat and spread out evenly on the pan.

Dinners don’t get much easier than this Sheet Pan Sausage and Potatoes recipe – and clean up is a breeze.

Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Toss the potatoes and onions and put back in the oven for an additional 15 minutes.

Toss the potatoes and onions again and then add the sliced sausage to the sheet pan, cut side down.

Place back in the oven for 10 minutes or until the sausage has browned and is warmed through. Serve immediately.
