Monster Munch Snack Recipe – An Easy Halloween Snack

October is the perfect time to make this Monster Munch snack recipe. Salty and crunchy ingredients such as Chex mix, Honey Nut Cheerios and pretzels are mixed together with sweet candies and then coated in white chocolate.

Once the mixture hardens it is broken into several smaller chunks. Every bite is filled with the classic combination of sweet and salty flavors.

Best of all it is easy to make and requires nothing more than a microwave to melt the chocolate. Simply toss everything together, coat it in melted chocolate and let it harden.

It is the perfect recipe to make for Halloween parties, tailgates and even as an snack when unexpected guests arrived. But I have to warn you….it is simply addicting!

You may think that one handful is enough, however, I can guarantee you that you will be coming back for more!

What Is Monster Munch Snack?

Depending where you live, you may have a different expectation of what Monster Munch means. Although this recipe is a delicious snack that both kids and adults love, it is not the same as the snack found in the United Kingdom.

In America, Monster Munch includes various types of cereal and candies that are sometimes, but not always coated in chocolate. It is hard to find this mixture at the grocery store, however it is often made in homes across the country, especially in the Autumn months.

Although, there is a commercially produced snack also called Monster Munch. It is a British baked corn snack that comes in a variety of flavors but isn’t easily found in the United States. That is of course, unless you purchase it through Amazon. (Amazon Affiliate Link: Monster Munch)

Monster Munch snacks are known for their unique shape, which is supposed to resemble monster paws. Although they are also known for their strong, bold flavors such as pickled onion, flamin’ hot and roast beef.

However, for this specific recipe we are going to stick to the sweet and salty treat that includes a combination of popular store-bought ingredients.

What Ingredients Are In Monster Munch Snack?

THE CRUNCHY INGREDIENTS:

1. Chex Cereal

Chex is a brand of cereal that is popular to eat for breakfast or to serve dry as a snack. They are made in the shape of small, hollow pillows that have a lattice exterior.

They are most often made with rice, wheat, or corn but can be found in other combinations as well. You can use any variety of Chex cereal that you prefer. Gluten Free: Use rice or corn cereal.

2. Pretzels

Small pretzels are added to the mix to give the snack a solid crunch and the salty flavor. It is best to choose between pretzel squares, mini pretzels or small pretzel sticks.

To make this a gluten free recipe, be sure to use gluten free pretzels. There are several brands to choose from at most large grocery stores, however be sure to choose small size pretzels for this recipe.

3. Honey Nut Cherrios

Using Honey Nut Cherrios will add both sweetness and crunch to the Monster Munch combination. You can use plain Cherrios if you prefer, but the slight hint of honey flavor pairs well with the other ingredients.

And just in case you are wondering, surprisingly Cherrios are naturally gluten free.

Be adding peanuts consider who will be eating the Monster Munch Snack to avoid any complications with allergies.

4. Peanuts (optional)

If you know that you are serving the treat to those who don’t have peanut allergies, add peanuts to the mix. In fact, take it one step further and use Honey Roasted Peanuts. You can’t beat the sweet and salty flavor that it adds.

However, if you are taking this to a group party (such as work or school), it is best to leave the peanuts out.

THE SWEET INGREDIENTS:

5. Candy Corn

This time of the year candy corn is readily available and is most likely on a front and center display at grocery stores, convenience stores, and even at local apple orchards and pumpkin patch farms.

You can use standard candy corn that has the white, yellow and orange shades of color. Or for more flavor choose Indian Corn or Harvest Corn where the colors go from white to orange and then to brown.

I have even used the candy pumpkins or a mixture of all 3 before to serve at a family Halloween party before. They are all delicious choices.

6. Candy Coated Chocolate or Peanut Butter Pieces

Grab a bag of Fall Colored M&M’s or Reese’s Pieces candy and throw a little chocolate and/or peanut butter in your Monster Munch Snack. However, it is best to stick to the M&M candies if taking this to a group party.

Also a word of advice, use full size (not the miniature size) candy. If you use the smaller pieces of candy they simply fall through to the bottom of the bowl and they aren’t large enough to provide enough chocolate flavor.

Melt white chocolate and pour it over the mix so it binds together.

7. White Chocolate

Once the above ingredients are mixed together it is time to add the binder that holds it all together. To take on the classic Monster Munch look we use white chocolate instead of standard brown chocolate.

This way the lighter coating allows you see the other ingredients and the white chocolate flavor provides a nice flavor contrast to the other sweet and salty flavors.

I prefer to use white chocolate melting wafers, because I have them on hand for the holiday season. However you can use white chocolate baking chips instead.
