Peanut Butter Pretzel Heart Candy Recipe

If you are looking for a cute and delicious Valentine’s Day candy to make for your loved ones this Peanut Butter Pretzel Heart Candy recipe is for you! A simple peanut butter mixture sandwiched between two small pretzel twists and then dipped in chocolate.

Then if you want to make them look even more festive, drizzle more chocolate on top and add a few colored sprinkles and/or non-pareils on top. They are the perfect treat that gives you that classic sweet and salty flavor but this time they are even better because of the peanut butter filling.

They remind me of peanut butter stuffed pretzels. You know the kind of nugget size pretzels that you find at your local wholesale club and in the middle they are full of peanut butter. They are so delicious that I have to avoid going down the snack aisle because I can’t resist buying the huge container of them.

In fact, I love almost anything peanut butter. And when you add chocolate and salty pretzels to the mix, it is even better.

What You Need To Make Peanut Butter Pretzel Candy

So when I was asked to make a Valentine’s day treat for a group function, I decided to combine those three flavors. And what more appropriate way than to make them into heart shaped treats, especially when it is super easy to do.

The outline of mini pretzels are naturally formed in a heart shape. Therefore, I used that as the base of the candy. Then, on my first attempt at making these treats, I spread peanut butter on top of the bottom pretzel.

Unfortunately, the peanut butter just oozed out between the holes of the pretzels and they were a mess to handle. Although it was good first attempt, I knew that my idea needed a new plan. That is when my recipe for homemade Reese’s Cup Easter Eggs and Buckeyes came to my mind.

Peanut Butter Filling

The peanut butter in the chocolate dipped peanut butter eggs and in the center of my Buckeye candy recipe is mixed with confectioner’s sugar and butter. So I decided that I could adapt that recipe to make these Peanut Butter Pretzel Heart Candy.

And it worked like a charm! The peanut butter mixture was thick enough that it sat on top of the pretzels without falling through the holes. Then I placed another pretzel on top, pushed it down into the peanut butter so it would stick and dipped them in chocolate.

The result, a heart shaped chocolate candy perfect for Valentine’s Day! Although you could also make them for your anniversary or simply a delicious (and cute) after school snack.

*Specific measurements and complete recipe instructions are located in a printable recipe card at the bottom of this article. However, be sure to continue to read the tips and tricks to making this recipe below.

INGREDIENTS

  • 60 Tiny Twist Pretzels
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/4 powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces white melting chocolate
  • 4 ounces pink melting chocolate
  • Sprinkles (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Start by placing 30 pretzels on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. You won’t be baking them, so you can place them on a large flat platter as well.

However, I prefer the clean up process to be simple and easy. Therefore, I choose to use the wax paper. You can also use parchment paper, but that can get quite expensive.

peanut butter stuffing
When you mix the peanut butter filling it will not be completely smooth. But be sure to mix until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Then in a medium size bowl mix softened butter, powdered sugar and peanut butter together until well incorporated. The mixture at this point will not be completely smooth but it is important to get the ingredients well incorporated.

Then using a cooking scoop or a spoon, place approximately 2 teaspoons of the peanut butter mixture on top of the pretzels smashing the mixture down lightly.

Next, top the peanut butter pretzels with the remaining 30 pretzels. Once you press the top pretzel down, some of the peanut butter may get squeezed out the edges. Be sure to remove the excess peanut butter in order to retain the heart shape of the pretzels.

Coat the Pretzels In Chocolate

Now melt the white chocolate in 15 second increments in a microwave safe bowl, stirring in between each cooking segment. Or you can use a double broiler and slowly melt the chocolate.

pretzel sandwich
Place peanut butter on a pretzel and then place another pretzel on top and lightly press so that the top pretzel is secure.

Once the chocolate melts and is smooth, drop one peanut butter stuffed pretzel in the melted chocolate and coat it completely. Then use a fork to remove the pretzel and allow it to drip off the excess chocolate back in the bowl.

Place the chocolate coated pretzel back on the wax paper. Repeat the process for the remaining peanut butter stuffed pretzels.

Pink Chocolate Drizzle

Once the chocolate on the pretzels have hardened melt the pink chocolate. This time of the year, you can most often find the pink chocolate melts in the baking aisle at most large grocery stores. However, if you don’t have or can’t find pink chocolate you can add a little red food coloring to white chocolate wafers.

Once the pink chocolate melts and is smooth, place it in a piping bag or a small plastic bag. Move all of the chocolate to one corner of the baggie and cut just the tip of the corner off.

Drizzle pink chocolate in a zig zag pattern over the top of the chocolate covered pretzels. Add sprinkles or non-pareils on top if desired.

Once the white chocolate has hardened, drizzle pink icing on top.

Let the chocolate completely harden and store in an air-tight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.
