Halloween Taco Ring Recipe

This Halloween Taco Ring is a fun and easy recipe that can be served as a family dinner or as an appetizer at a Halloween party. Seasoned ground beef and melted cheese are wrapped inside refrigerated crescent roll dough and baked until golden brown.

Once it comes out of the oven, add your favorite taco toppings around the ring or place a bowl of salsa in the center. With a few simple decorations, an ordinary taco ring becomes a festive Halloween meal that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Best of all, the recipe requires only a few basic ingredients. It is easy to prepare, easy to serve and can be customized with the toppings that your family likes best.

This recipe is a great option when you want to make something festive without spending hours in the kitchen. The taco meat can even be prepared ahead of time so that all you have to do is assemble and bake the ring when you are ready to eat.

Ingredients Required To Make A Halloween Taco Ring

Ground Beef

Use one pound of lean ground beef for the taco filling. Ground beef with a ratio of 90/10 works well because there is very little grease to drain after it cooks.

You can also make the taco ring with ground turkey or ground chicken. Just be sure the meat is completely cooked before adding it to the crescent roll dough.

Taco Seasoning

A standard packet of taco seasoning is the quickest option. You can also use two tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning if you keep it in your pantry.

Prepare the meat according to the instructions on the seasoning packet. Most seasoning mixes require approximately one-third cup of water.

After adding the water and seasoning, let the mixture simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated. The filling should be moist, but it should not be runny. Too much liquid can make the bottom of the crescent dough soggy.

Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough

You will need two 8-ounce tubes of refrigerated crescent roll dough. Each tube should contain eight triangles, giving you a total of sixteen.

If you purchase crescent dough sheets by mistake, you can still use them. Unroll the sheets and cut each one into eight similar-sized triangles.

Keep the dough refrigerated until you are ready to assemble the ring. Cold dough is easier to separate, position and fold.

Shredded Cheese

Mexican blend, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack or cheddar cheese will work in this recipe. I typically use a Mexican cheese blend because it melts well and has a mild flavor that goes nicely with the taco seasoning.

For the best texture, shred the cheese from a block. Packaged shredded cheese can be used when you are short on time, but freshly shredded cheese generally melts more smoothly.

How To Make A Halloween Taco Ring

Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F. Line a large baking sheet or pizza pan with parchment paper.

Although you can bake the taco ring directly on a nonstick pan, parchment paper makes it much easier to transfer the finished ring to a serving platter.

Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Break the meat apart with a spatula as it cooks.

Once no pink remains, drain the grease if necessary. Add the taco seasoning and water to the skillet and stir until the meat is evenly coated.

Reduce the heat and simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the meat cool for approximately five minutes.

This brief cooling period is important. If the filling is extremely hot, it can soften the crescent roll dough and make the ring difficult to assemble.

How To Arrange The Crescent Rolls

Open both tubes of crescent roll dough and separate the dough into sixteen triangles.

Place a small bowl in the center of the parchment paper as a guide. Arrange the wide ends of the dough around the bowl, overlapping the edges slightly. The pointed ends should extend away from the center like the rays of a sun.

Once the triangles are arranged, remove the bowl. Gently press the overlapping sections of dough together.

Spoon the taco meat evenly around the wide portion of the crescent dough. Keep the filling in a relatively narrow circle so that it will be easy to cover.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the meat. Avoid adding extra salsa, tomatoes or other wet toppings inside the ring because they can make the dough soggy.

Pick up the pointed end of each triangle and fold it over the filling. Tuck the point underneath the inner edge of the dough.

Continue folding the points over the filling until the entire ring is covered. Small spaces between the pieces of dough are perfectly fine. In fact, they allow some of the filling to show through and give the finished taco ring a nice appearance.

Baking Instructions

Place the Halloween Taco Ring in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.

The exact baking time will depend on the thickness of the filling and your oven. The crescent roll dough should be deep golden brown on the top and along the bottom edges.

If the top begins to brown before the bottom is fully baked, loosely cover the ring with aluminum foil and continue baking.

Remove the pan from the oven and allow the taco ring to rest for five minutes. This gives the cheese and filling time to settle and makes the ring easier to slice.

Use the parchment paper to carefully slide the taco ring onto a large serving platter.

Make It Look Festive For Halloween

The easiest way to give the taco ring a Halloween theme is to place a bowl of salsa in the center. Use sliced black olives to make a small spider on top of the salsa.

Place one whole olive in the center to form the body. Cut another olive into thin strips and arrange the strips around the body to look like spider legs.

You can also place two small dots of sour cream on the whole olive to make eyes.

Another option is to fill the center with guacamole and make a monster face with sliced olives. Use sour cream to create the whites of the eyes and small olive pieces for the pupils.

Decorate the serving platter with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, olives and sliced green onions. Guests can use the toppings to customize their individual portions.

What To Serve With A Halloween Taco Ring

If you are serving the Halloween Taco Ring for dinner, add a simple side of Mexican rice, refried beans or a green salad.

For a Halloween party, cut the ring into sixteen smaller portions and serve it with salsa, guacamole, sour cream and queso.

You can also pair it with Taco in a Bag if you need another easy meal for a group. Set out bowls of taco toppings and let everyone assemble their own dinner.

For dessert, Halloween Candy Bark is an easy way to continue the Halloween theme. It is also a great recipe to make with leftover Halloween candy.

Make-Ahead Instructions

The taco meat can be prepared up to two days in advance. Let it cool completely and store it in a covered container in the refrigerator.

When you are ready to make the ring, reheat the meat just until it is warm. Do not add piping hot filling to the crescent roll dough.

You can assemble the taco ring up to two hours before baking. Cover the entire pan with plastic wrap and keep it refrigerated.

Remove the plastic wrap and place the ring directly into the preheated oven. You may need to add two or three minutes to the baking time because the dough and filling will be cold.

I do not recommend assembling it the night before. The moisture in the filling can soak into the dough and prevent it from becoming crisp.
