Air Fryer Meatloaf Recipe – Moist & Juicy Every Time!

When I first purchased an air fryer, I didn’t even consider making meatloaf in it. My only intentions were to make foods that were traditionally deep-fried.

So when I opened the box and plugged my Air Fryer in, I pulled out a few potatoes and made Homemade French Fries. Then I expanded to making Onion Rings, Tater Tots and even Air Fryer Donuts.

I couldn’t be happier with the results! I could made healthier side dishes and desserts in less time than it took to bake them. So then I started to give main dishes a try.

I first started with chicken nuggets and chicken tenders. And then on to pork chops and salmon. Again, the results were nothing short of amazing.

So when meatloaf was requested for dinner, I thought why not make it in the Air Fryer? At this point, between my Instant Pot and Air Fryer Power 360, I hadn’t used my oven in months.

Therefore, I gathered my traditional meatloaf ingredients and decided to give it a try.

How to Make Air Fryer Meatloaf

Although everyone has their own special homemade meatloaf recipe, I will explain how we make ours.

cooked onions
Diced onions cooked down until soft and tender before being added to the other ingredients.

Start by sautéing diced onions in a hot skillet with a little bit of oil. Once they are nice and tender, remove them from the heat and set aside to cool.

In the mean time, prepare the other ingredients in a medium size bowl. We typically use a pound of ground beef. However, you could also make this recipe with ground turkey or chicken if you prefer.

Add More Liquid If Using Ground Turkey or Chicken

Although, if you do use a super lean meat to make your air fryer meatloaf, I suggest adding an additional teaspoon of liquid to the recipe. You could add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup or even beef stock if you prefer.

The best meatloaf is made from a free form loaf.

Place all the ingredients, except the barbecue sauce, in the bowl and add the cooled onions. Mix the meat gently with a fork or your hands just until incorporated.

Do not over mix by squeezing the meat between your fingers. You want to mix the meat and other ingredients gently so that it doesn’t become too dense when cooked.

Line your air fryer basket with foil and place the meatloaf mixture in the center of the basket. Form the meat into a free standing rectangle approximately 4 x 6 inches in size.

After about 20 minutes of cooking, brush the top of the meatloaf with barbecue sauce.

Preheat your Air Fryer at 375°F per your manufacturer’s instructions. Then place the basket in the air fryer and cook for 20 minutes.

When the cook time is up, remove the meatloaf from the air fryer and brush the barbecue sauce on top. Return the basket into the air fryer and cook an additional 8-10 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F when tested with a digital food thermometer.

Be sure to check the internal temperature with a digital thermometer to make sure the meat is cooked through.

Let the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
