Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak Dip – All The Flavors Of The Classic Sandwich Made Into A Dip

The next time that you are looking for an easy and delicious appetizer to share with your family and friends, make this Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak Dip.

It has all the flavors of a classic cheesesteak but instead of serving it as a sandwich, it is made into a creamy dip. Grilled onions and peppers are paired with tender chunks of beef and mixed together with a creamy combination to make an irresistible appetizer.

It is the perfect recipe to serve on game day or anytime you are gathering with family and friends. And because it is made in a crock pot, it can easily be transported to a party.

You can serve the dip with baguette slices to keep the sandwich theme alive. However it can also be served with crackers, tortilla chips or with vegetable slices for your low carb friends.

With a few simple steps you can have this dip prepared and cooking in the slow cooker in under 15 minutes. However, as much as you might be want to throw everything in the crock pot and walk away, you must first saute the onions in a skillet.

The added flavor of the caramelized onions gives this dip that iconic cheesesteak flavor. But what exactly makes up a Philly Cheesesteak?

What Is In An Authentic Philly Cheesesteak?

Over the years there has been much debate on what makes up authentic Philly Cheesesteak, especially since this menu item is served across the country.

However, a cheesesteak always begins with a long, crusty roll that is filled with thinly sliced, sautéed rib-eye steak. Then, depending on which restaurant or food cart that you order it from, American cheese, Provolone cheese or Cheese Whiz is added on top of the meat.

And if you preferred grilled onions can be added as well. In fact, if you are in Philadelphia, it is common to order ‘a cheesesteak wit’ if you want to order it with onions.

Although, if you prefer to skip the onions, order ‘a cheesesteak witout’ to get only beef and cheese. The choice is up to you.

However, over the years there have been many variations made of this iconic sandwich. And there are a couple of variations that I used to make my crock pot Philly cheesesteak dip as well.

diced roast beef
Although a classic Philly cheesesteak is made with thinly sliced ribeye, I use roast beef instead. It is quick, easy and delicious!

Recipe Variations For Easy Philly Cheesesteak Dip

First of all, thinly sliced green peppers are often added to the sandwich for added crunch and flavor. Therefore, in an effort to get as much flavor from the dip as possible, I added diced green peppers as well.

And as for the meat? Well, to be honest, cooking and slicing up a ribeye steak to make a dip for a party seemed like a lot of work.

Therefore, I used store bought, deli sliced roast beef instead. You still get the flavor of thinly sliced beef, but without the expense, time and effort that it takes to cook a ribeye steak.

However, if you prefer to use a steak instead of roast beef, by all means go for it! The dip would be even more delicious!

sauteed onions and peppers in a dip
Although you might consider throwing everything in the crock pot, don’t skip out on sautéing the onions and peppers. It adds so much flavor to the dip!

INSTRUCTIONS

The first step in making this crock pot Philly cheesesteak dip is to place the cream cheese and sour cream in a 4-6 quart slow cooker. Because you are making a dip there is no need to soften the cream cheese prior to it going into the pot.

Next, dice the roast beef into small 1/4 inch pieces and place inside the crock pot with the cream cheese and sour cream. Set the pot aside while you saute the onions and peppers.

In a large skillet placed over medium heat melt the butter. Then add the diced onion, diced pepper, and brown sugar and saute for 8-10 minutes until the onions caramelize and the peppers are tender.

Then add the minced garlic and salt to the skillet and cook for 1 minute, or until the garlic is fragrant. Turn off the heat and transfer the onion, pepper, and garlic mixture to the crock pot.

Diced the sliced provolone cheese into 1/2 inch blocks. Reserve 1/2 cup of the cut cheese for later use.

Add the remaining provolone cheese to the crock pot and place the lid on the slow cooker. You do not need to stir the ingredients at this time.

cut provolone cheese and roast beef cubes
Because it is difficult to find shredded Provolone cheese, I use slices instead. Just be sure to cut them in smaller sections so that they melt faster.

Cook Time Required

Place the slow cooker on high for 2 hours on or low for 4-5 hours. Half way through the cooking process, open the lid to the crock pot and stir the Philly Cheesesteak Dip.

Once everything is melted and hot, add the reserved Provolone cheese on top. Cook for another 30 minutes or until the cheese melts.

Serve the dip right out of the slow cooker or transfer the mixture to a serving dish. Serve with baguette slices, crackers, tortilla chips or sliced vegetables.

Common Recipe Substitutions

Although this is my favorite way to make the dip, below I have included some common recipe variations that you might like as well.

Veggies

Feel free to add other vegetables to the dip to give it a unique flavor. For instance, the most common cheesesteak veggie additions include sweet bell peppers and mushrooms.

However, be sure to saute them before adding them to the dip to achieve maximum flavor.

Once everything is hot and bubbly, add more cheese on top and let it melt.

Meat

As mentioned above, a thinly sliced and diced ribeye steak would be a great substitution. However, I also love the taste of a Chicken Philly Cheesesteak sandwich.

Therefore, you could use cooked, diced chicken to make crock pot Philly Chicken Cheesesteak dip instead.

Cheese

Historically, the first cheese added to a cheesesteak was Provolone cheese. Because it is difficult to find shredded Provolone cheese, I use the slices of cheese that I cut into smaller pieces.

However, you could substitute a shredded blend of Mozzarella and Provolone cheese instead. Or feel free to add in that jar of Cheez Whiz or slices of American cheese to get that extra gooey texture.

Enjoy! Mary
